true
Before he was The Answer, he was Bubba Chuck — born in Hampton, Virginia, to a mother who was fifteen years old, in a house where some winters raw sewage backed up through the floors. The whole block knew him. He was the kid who looked after the little ones.
Chapter
His father was never in the picture. The man who filled that space, Michael Freeman, was arrested for dealing drugs right in front of him when Allen was thirteen — and the boy stopped going to school and failed the eighth grade. In Hampton, poverty wasn't a backdrop. It was the whole weather system.
Chapter
But the kid could play — everything. At Bethel High he was a two-sport miracle: starting quarterback and starting point guard. His junior year he dragged both teams to Virginia state championships and was named the Associated Press High School Player of the Year in football AND basketball. To this day some people in Virginia swear football was his better sport.
Chapter
Then, on Valentine's Day 1993, it almost all ended. A brawl broke out between Black and white teenagers at a Hampton bowling alley. Iverson, seventeen, was arrested — and the town split down a line everyone could see and no one wanted to name.
