NBA team ratings.

Offensive rating is points scored per 100 possessions, defensive rating is points allowed per 100 — so a low defensive rating is a good one — and net rating is the gap between them. Dividing by possessions rather than by games is the whole point: it separates a good offence from a merely fast one. These are the final figures for 2025-26; no later season is included.

What counts as good. The league average is 113.5 points per 100 possessions, and offensive and defensive ratings share that average because one team’s points scored are another’s points allowed. Net ratings therefore average 0.04 — essentially zero, which is the arithmetic working rather than a coincidence. Read a team’s number as its distance from that line: around +5 is a contender, around −5 is a lottery team. The definitions.

All 30 NBA teams for 2025-26, sorted by net rating. Offensive and defensive ranks are given per column; for defensive rating, rank 1 is the fewest points allowed.

The halves disagree, and that is the useful part. The best offence (Denver Nuggets, 120.3 per 100) and the best defence (Oklahoma City Thunder, 106.0 allowed) were different teams, which is why the two columns are worth reading separately rather than only their difference.
Where this comes from. Pace above is possessions per game. ESPN team statistics + standings, 2025-26 season, refreshed 2026-10-01. Possessions are estimated as FGA + 0.44 × FTA − offensive rebounds + turnovers. Defensive rating uses each team’s own possession count, a standard approximation because a team and its opponents end a season with nearly the same number. This is a completed season, not a live one.
