The Ballad of Gail Goodrich

Birth to now — the making of a legend, narrated and scored.

Los Angeles Lakers

Turning pro

Drafted 1965 as a Guard.

true

On the 1971-72 Lakers — the team that won 33 games in a row, the longest streak in the history of American pro sports — the leading scorer wasn't Wilt or West. It was a 6-foot-1 left-handed guard from Los Angeles named Gail Goodrich.

Chapter

He was a hometown creation, sharpened at UCLA under John Wooden, where he won national titles before he ever turned pro. The city watched him grow up and then watched him come home to lead its team.

Chapter

That 1972 title finally broke the Lakers' long Finals curse, and Goodrich's scoring was the engine — the quick, crafty guard who kept the defense honest while the legends around him got the headlines. Hall of Fame eventually came calling, and the number 25 went into the Forum rafters for good.
