Act IV

The Ballad of Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf

Birth to now — the making of a legend, narrated and scored.

Denver Nuggets

Turning pro

Drafted 1990 as a Guard.

true

Twenty years before Colin Kaepernick took a knee, a slight, electric guard in Denver stayed seated during the anthem — and the mile-high air went silent around him.

Chapter

He was born Chris Jackson, arrived from LSU as one of the most electric scorers in the country, and played through Tourette syndrome — turning its relentless need for repetition into a shooting stroke so pure he became one of the greatest free-throw shooters who ever lived.

Chapter

In 1996 he refused to stand for the flag, calling it a symbol of oppression. The league suspended him; a compromise let him stand and pray. But the stand cost him — traded, then pushed out of the NBA in his prime, years before the world would decide he'd been early, not wrong.

Chapter

The numbers say elite scorer and all-time free-throw marksman. The story says something bigger: a man who paid full price for his conscience two decades before it was safe to.
