The Ballad of Tony Allen

Birth to now — the making of a legend, narrated and scored.

Memphis Grizzlies

Turning pro

Drafted 2004 as a Guard.

true

After a win in 2011, a wound-up Tony Allen looked into a camera and growled the words that would name a franchise: all heart, grit, grit and grind. He didn't coin a slogan that night — he coined an identity, and Memphis has worn it ever since.

Chapter

He'd already won a ring in Boston in 2008 as a role player, but he found his true self in Memphis — assigned, night after night, to the other team's most dangerous scorer, and told simply to make his life miserable.

Chapter

He became the best perimeter defender of his era, a six-time All-Defensive honoree who took it as a personal insult to let his man breathe. Kobe Bryant called him the best defender he ever faced — and Kobe faced everyone.

Chapter

His offense was optional; his effort never was. That was the covenant with the Grindhouse — you may miss shots, but you will not be out-hustled. It's why his No. 9 hangs in the rafters and why, in Memphis, they still say his name like scripture.
