The Ballad of Boris Diaw

Birth to now — the making of a legend, narrated and scored.

San Antonio Spurs

Turning pro

Drafted 2003 as a Forward.

true

He traveled the NBA with an espresso machine in his luggage and a paperback in his bag, a Frenchman who seemed too unbothered to be a professional athlete — until San Antonio handed him the ball and discovered the calmest mind in the building.

Chapter

Charlotte had let him go. San Antonio saw what others read as softness and called it patience. In a system built on the extra pass, Diaw was the extra pass made flesh — a big man who thought two moves ahead and never seemed to hurry, because hurrying was for people who didn't understand where the ball was going.

Chapter

The 2014 Finals were his vindication. Popovich moved him into the starting lineup against Miami, and Diaw answered not with points but with poise — screening, passing, defending Boris-sized problems, dismantling a superteam with the least glamorous skill set imaginable.

Chapter

That was always the joke and the truth about him: the man who looked least like a champion understood the game more deeply than almost anyone on the floor. In a city that made boring beautiful, he was the patron saint of it.
