The Ballad of Clyde Lovellette

Birth to now — the making of a legend, narrated and scored.

Los Angeles Lakers

Turning pro

Drafted 1952 as a Center.

true

In 1952 Clyde Lovellette led the nation in scoring and won the national championship in the same season — a feat no one had managed before. Two years later he was a champion again, this time in a Minneapolis Lakers uniform.

Chapter

He was a scoring big man in an era that hadn't quite figured out what to do with one — a 6-foot-9 center with a soft touch who won the 1954 title alongside George Mikan, the game's original giant, before the franchise ever saw palm trees.

Chapter

His rings came in two different uniforms — a rare traveling man who kept finding the winning side, riding Bill Russell's Celtics to two more titles after his Lakers crown. Wherever he went, banners followed. That is the whole legend: Clyde Lovellette simply won, everywhere he stood.
