The Ballad of David Robinson

Birth to now — the making of a legend, narrated and scored.

San Antonio Spurs

Turning pro

Drafted 1987 as a Center.

true

On the final day of the 1994 season, he needed a big night to win the scoring title, so he poured in 71 points against the Clippers — a career naval officer who had reported to the Spurs two years late because he owed his country a commission first.

Chapter

The Navy claimed his years before the NBA got its turn. He served his commission, then arrived in San Antonio fully formed — a 7-footer who ran like a guard and carried himself like an officer, because he had been one.

Chapter

He won it all: MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, a scoring crown, the Dream Team. He was the best center alive and the pillar the whole franchise stood on. And still the championship would not come.

Chapter

So when Tim Duncan arrived, the Admiral did the hardest thing a superstar can do — he stepped aside, shared the paint, and let the Twin Towers win two titles the quiet way. He retired in 2003 a champion, on the night his team lifted the trophy.
