The Ballad of George Mikan

Birth to now — the making of a legend, narrated and scored.

Los Angeles Lakers

Turning pro

Drafted 1946 as a Center.

true

A New York marquee once read simply: 'GEO MIKAN vs KNICKS.' One man, billed against an entire team — because in the game's first decade, George Mikan was the entire draw.

Chapter

The bespectacled giant was so dominant the league literally changed its shape to contain him — widening the lane, and later adding a shot clock, in part to counter a big man no one could stop. He wasn't just great. He forced the sport to rewrite its own rules.

Chapter

With the Minneapolis Lakers he built the NBA's first dynasty, stacking championships in the game's infancy and putting the franchise's name on the map before the map ever reached California.

Chapter

When the Lakers moved west and became Hollywood royalty, they were building on ground he cleared. Every banner in that arena, every star under those lights, traces back to the man in the thick glasses who made pro basketball worth buying a ticket for.
