Act IV

The Ballad of Marc Gasol

Birth to now — the making of a legend, narrated and scored.

Memphis Grizzlies

Turning pro

Drafted 2007 as a Center.

true

In 2008, Memphis traded away Pau Gasol — its franchise cornerstone — and got back, among other things, his heavyset little brother, a kid most of the fanbase had never seen play. The city groaned. It had no idea it had just landed the better Grizzly.

Chapter

Marc turned himself into the thinking man's big — a high-post maestro who saw passes two moves early and defended the rim like a closed door. In 2013 he was named Defensive Player of the Year, the rare center who won it on brains and footwork instead of pure hops.

Chapter

He became the anchor of Grit and Grind, the calm giant behind Memphis' loudest, meanest teams — the 2013 club that clawed its way to the Western Conference Finals playing defense like a bar fight. On the banks of the Mississippi, the quiet Spaniard learned to snarl.

Chapter

When the ring finally came, it came in another city — traded to Toronto, he won it all in 2019, the last piece on a champion. Memphis watched a son of its grind lift the trophy somewhere else and felt both the ache and the pride of it.
