Act IV

The Ballad of Nene

Birth to now — the making of a legend, narrated and scored.

Denver Nuggets

Turning pro

Drafted 2002 as a Center.

true

He arrived in Denver as a teenager from Brazil and grew into one of the most respected big men of his era — but the toughest opponent he ever beat wasn't on the floor.

Chapter

The first Brazilian ever taken in the first round, Nenê became a powerful, efficient interior force a mile up in the Rockies — soft hands, a high field-goal percentage, and a body built for the paint.

Chapter

In 2008 he was diagnosed with testicular cancer. He beat it, and came back — years more of steady, physical, unselfish basketball, the kind Denver builds its identity around. Eventually he dropped his surname entirely. One name was enough.
