The Ballad of Zach Randolph

Birth to now — the making of a legend, narrated and scored.

Memphis Grizzlies

Turning pro

Drafted 2001 as a Forward.

true

Marion, Indiana raised him hard, and by the time Memphis traded for him in 2009, Zach Randolph carried the baggage of Portland's "Jail Blazers" years — a talented big man a lot of teams had written off as more trouble than he was worth. Memphis saw a reclamation project. It got the heart of a movement.

Chapter

He played like a throwback bully in the paint, all shoulders and stubbornness. In the 2011 playoffs he dragged the eighth-seeded Grizzlies past the No. 1 Spurs, bludgeoning a title contender into a first-round grave and announcing Grit and Grind to the whole league.

Chapter

Off the floor he became the people's champ — quietly paying utility bills for strangers, throwing block parties, planting himself in the neighborhoods most of the league never visits. A city that had never fully claimed a superstar claimed Z-Bo as its own son.

Chapter

When his No. 50 rose into the rafters, it wasn't for a scoring title or an MVP. It was for the toughness he poured into a franchise and the redemption he found on the Mississippi — proof that Memphis loves nothing more than a fighter the world gave up on.
